How we compared the products

Build your shortlist

For a US practice replacing its core system, compare Dentrix, Ascend, Open Dental, CareStack and Curve. To keep your current system and improve patient communication, compare NexHealth, Weave, Adit and RevenueWell. Consider Dental Intelligence or CareCru for reporting and follow-up workflows. Evaluate Pearl and Overjet separately with your clinical team.

Choose the category before choosing the brand

A practice management system, a patient communication platform and an imaging AI tool solve different problems. Start by identifying which part of your working day needs to change. Then compare products within that category, including the functions already available in your current subscription.

If your clinical system works well but staff spend the day returning messages, a communication platform deserves a closer look. If the underlying appointment book, ledger or charting workflow is the problem, adding another dashboard may leave that problem intact. A full PMS change also means reviewing migration, training and the handover of existing records.

Practice management

Dentrix

Compare it for: established US practices evaluating an on-premise core system.

Dentrix combines clinical records, insurance and billing workflows with patient communication and reporting options. Its official product overview separates clinical, financial, patient-experience and analytics capabilities, while its package structure allows different combinations of services.

Include Dentrix when local infrastructure and the existing team's workflow are central to the decision. For a practice already using it, review the current package before replacing the system: the missing capability may be an available module or connected product. Treat Ascend as a separate cloud product when comparing workflows and migration.

Check before choosing: Ask for the exact software version, system requirements, support package and third-party connections in the proposal. The US and Canadian offerings should not be assumed identical.

Ascend by Dentrix

Compare it for: practices comparing a cloud PMS for clinical and administrative work.

Ascend by Dentrix connects cloud charting and imaging with scheduling, insurance, billing and practice reporting. Its documented capabilities also include patient reminders and multi-location dashboards.

The useful comparison is how those tasks connect for your team. Ask to follow one patient from an appointment request through treatment, a claim and payment, using the package being quoted. The vendor's Overview screenshot shows operational worklists, including unresolved claims and unconfirmed appointments; those screens are more informative than a general promise of an all-in-one platform.

Check before choosing: Do not assume an existing Dentrix workflow, integration or data field transfers unchanged to Ascend. Confirm US practice requirements, migration scope and the exact package.

Open Dental

Compare it for: practices wanting a documented core system and a published US fee schedule.

Open Dental organizes work into seven documented modules: appointments, family, account, treatment plan, chart, imaging and management. This makes its scope straightforward to inspect before a sales conversation.

It is worth comparing when you want to see how scheduling, patient accounts and clinical records fit together, with separately identified services. The standard license and support arrangement is self-hosted; Open Dental Cloud is also offered in the US with additional fees. Those deployment choices should be priced separately.

Check before choosing: The base support fee is not a complete implementation budget. Data conversion, cloud hosting and selected eServices are additional; review provider counts and messaging charges.

Price and buying terms

US license and support: $199/month/location for the initial 12 months, covering up to three providers. The published current reduced rate is $149/month/location after 12 consecutive months; the rate applicable at month 13 is determined then. Cloud fees and data conversion are additional. CareStack

Compare it for: practices and dental groups comparing a broad cloud platform.

CareStack's Essentials package lists scheduling, treatment planning, imaging, patient forms, insurance workflows, messaging and a daily huddle dashboard. Its Intelligence tier adds advertised clinical AI functions.

This is a candidate when the practice wants to review several operational systems together. Ask the team to identify which existing subscriptions the proposed package would actually replace. Groups should also demonstrate how location permissions and reporting work across their offices. CareStack publishes a developer portal, discussed below, for buyers with integration requirements.

Curve Dental

Compare it for: US and Canadian practices evaluating browser-based practice management.

Curve Dental connects scheduling, clinical records, imaging, billing and patient communication in a cloud system. Its official FAQ states that it runs through a browser on Mac, PC and Chromebook.

Compare Curve when access across workstations and an integrated clinical-administrative workflow are priorities. During the demonstration, ask to move between a scheduled patient, their chart, images and financial information. Then have the implementation team explain what it can convert from your existing system and how the practice will check that conversion.

Dentally

Compare it for: UK and other explicitly supported international markets; not a verified US option.

Dentally's UK offering brings together cloud practice management, imaging and a patient portal for bookings, forms and payments. The website provides separate regional routes for the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand.

It belongs in this comparison as a market-specific reference. A US reader should not infer US billing support or availability from an English-language interface. A UK practice can compare its local packages directly, including the number of surgeries and the features needed by the team.

Patient communication and marketing

NexHealth

Compare it for: practices prioritizing online booking and connected patient administration.

NexHealth connects online booking with the practice's health record system. Its wider offering includes reminders, recall booking, waitlists, forms and payments. The pricing page separates these products and offers custom plans.

For a practice that wants to keep its PMS, the deciding question is what the connection does with that exact system. Demonstrate appointment types, provider availability, a returning patient and a reschedule. Ask where staff see changes and which tasks still need manual review.

Weave

Compare it for: practices comparing connected phones, texting and front-desk workflows.

Weave's plan comparison covers VoIP phones, two-way texting, reminders, missed-call texting and call analytics. It also lists scheduling, reviews, payments and dental-specific analytics or insurance features, depending on the package.

Put Weave on the shortlist when the phone system and patient messages need to work together. Have the front desk demonstrate an incoming call, a missed call and the subsequent conversation. Compare the proposed phone hardware and messaging allowance with what the practice actually needs.

Adit

Compare it for: practices wanting lead management alongside calls, messages and patient follow-up.

Adit lists CRM lead management, phone and messaging tools, digital forms, online scheduling, reviews and practice analytics. That combination makes it relevant when the practice needs to follow an inquiry through to an appointment, as well as communicate with existing patients.

Ask to see how a new lead is assigned, what happens after an unanswered call and where the outcome is recorded. Compare the lead workflow with the patient workflow rather than assuming they are the same record. Its official onboarding page describes separate setup and adoption phases.

RevenueWell

Compare it for: dental practices comparing patient engagement software with optional marketing services.

RevenueWell presents patient engagement software covering reminders, campaigns, messaging, reviews and analytics. It also sells digital marketing services and advertises AI receptionist and insurance-verification products.

The distinction matters when comparing proposals. A software subscription gives the practice tools to operate; managed SEO, advertising or website services represent a different scope of work. Ask for separate line items and identify which tasks your staff will still perform. That makes the quote easier to compare with software-only alternatives.

Analytics and patient engagement

Dental Intelligence

Compare it for: owners and managers who want practice data connected to daily team activity.

Dental Intelligence offers analytics and reporting alongside Morning Huddle, scorecards and follow-up tools. Its broader platform also includes scheduling, communication and payment-related products.

It is a relevant comparison when the team needs to identify work from practice data and decide who should act on it. Ask to see the definition behind a metric, the underlying patient list and how a follow-up is completed. The official site names PMS integrations including Dentrix, Ascend, Open Dental and Eaglesoft.

CareCru

Compare it for: practices connecting performance reporting with patient workflow automation.

CareCru's dashboards cover production, collections, receivables, schedule utilization and unscheduled treatment. The same page documents drilldowns and exports of the underlying metric data.

Its wider platform adds booking, waitlists, recalls, reminders and campaigns. Compare CareCru when the team wants both visibility and a way to organize the next action. The official website provides US and Canadian login routes; confirm your practice's market and PMS with the vendor.

Clinical AI

Pearl Second Opinion

Compare it for: clinical teams evaluating AI-assisted radiograph review and patient explanation.

Pearl Second Opinion highlights areas of interest on dental radiographs. This is a clinical workflow decision, separate from choosing lead management, booking or campaign software.

Pearl's own help documentation states that Second Opinion is assistive and that a qualified dental professional makes diagnostic decisions. Ask the clinical team to evaluate the image workflow, display and patient explanation process using the modalities and integrations proposed for your practice.

Overjet Vision AI

Compare it for: clinical teams comparing radiographic annotations and related practice workflows.

Overjet Vision AI displays radiographic annotations and measurements, including bone-level information. Its product page also describes daily patient and practice workflows around the imaging review.

Evaluate it with the clinicians who will interpret the images. Ask to see the connection to your imaging system, how findings are reviewed and how the information is explained to a patient. The relevant comparison with Pearl is the proposed clinical workflow and supported configuration, not an unsupported claim that one produces better outcomes.

Check what an integration actually does

Ask which records a connection reads, which it changes and how staff resolve a failed update. A vendor logo in an integration directory is only the start of that conversation. Use your exact PMS name, version and deployment type when requesting an answer.

There are concrete examples in the documentation. CareStack's developer portal describes APIs for patient information, payment summaries, communications and documents, plus scheduled data extracts and real-time events. That establishes documented integration capabilities, not that a custom connection is included in the normal subscription. CareCru documents exports of underlying dashboard data; a reporting export should still be distinguished from a complete patient-record migration.

Before signing, ask for a sample export and a written explanation of what you can retrieve at the end of the contract. Check records, attachments, images, communication history and financial data separately. Include the delivery format, fees and timing in the agreement.

Compare the full cost, then demonstrate the work

A published monthly price is a useful starting point. Build the comparison around the package your practice would actually buy: locations, providers, phones, message volumes, implementation, conversion, training and optional services. Separate one-time charges from recurring fees and transaction charges.

Bring a short set of realistic scenarios to each demonstration: book a new patient, change an appointment, contact an overdue patient, review a treatment plan and reconcile a payment. For clinical AI, use a separate clinician-led evaluation. Ask the person who normally performs each task to follow the proposed workflow and identify what remains manual.

Which dental marketing software should you shortlist?

For booking and patient administration, start with NexHealth. For connected phones and messages, compare Weave and Adit. For engagement software alongside managed marketing, review RevenueWell's separate scopes. Dental Intelligence and CareCru belong in the comparison when reporting and follow-up are central. These are starting points based on documented functions, not performance rankings.

Keep the final choice tied to a specific job and a verified connection to your practice. A clear proposal, a demonstrated workflow and an understood exit process are more useful than a long list of features your team may never use.

How this comparison was researched

We reviewed official product pages, pricing pages and documentation on October 29, 2026. Products are grouped by the work they support, not ranked by an invented overall score. Feature descriptions reflect vendor documentation; we did not test accounts, measure clinical accuracy or audit security. Screenshots are vendor examples, not evidence of results in a Forge client practice. The comparison focuses on US buyers, with Dentally explicitly included as a UK and international reference.

This is a selection of relevant products, not an exhaustive market directory. “Best” means a fit for a defined workflow. Product names, capabilities and prices can change; the linked official sources let you check the current offer.
